The Nokia N81 Mobile Phone Review

Nokia has been putting out 8 GB versions of phones a lot these days. Some have increased features over their predecessors while some do have stripped down features and n81 is one of them. It’s a 3G phone which has been available since November 2007. It comes in dimensions of 102×50x18mm and weights cool 140 grams which is quite a lot as compared to other mobile phones with similar storage even in the Nokia’s stable like the N95-8GB which is almost 20grams lighter than the n81.

Also the display is just 2.4 inches which is too common with almost all the phones these days and if Nokia is targeting this device in the leagues of gaming consoles then probably it should give a second thought to its decisions. The display otherwise is clear and crisp and is visible in sunlight. Also there is less problem of pixilation as the QVGA resolution is not stretched to bigger screens thereby the icons are more of a photos than matrix of dots.

The navi-wheel is a new concept here which is an iPod styled browsing interface put in it, though menus can’t be scrolled with it. This may be removed by Nokia in firmware up gradation. The phonebook allows practically unlimited entries with the call records available for 3o days.

The multimedia is also very good as the phone is equipped with an ample amount of display screen estate which utilizes the 8GB capacity of its storage to the maximum. However the support for current popular video formats like Divx and AVI is missing here. The pencil key which was one of the prominent features in the Nokia phones used to edit the text is missing and instead of it the editing is integrated into the right soft key itself.

The buttons in the device are too hard and tactile to give a feedback for pressing them, so samsung would be bit of inconvenient. Overall verdict says that the n81 does need a lot of more features to keep itself in the league of other mobiles in its class. But for music and gaming its performance is perfectly acceptable
